Kiwi Hoops in Schools

Proudly supported by

Kiwi Hoops is Basketball New Zealand's official junior national development programme. The programme utilises a variety of fun and inclusive basketball games and activities to introduce fundamental movement and sport, thinking and life skills, while also supporting player development.

Participation across the country has grown by more than 300% since 2015 and local providers haven’t been able to meet the demand. We’ve secured funding through the good people at NZCT and teamed up with the Property Brokers Jets to begin delivering the programme free-of-charge in schools across the region.

Kiwi Hoops Principles

The programme’s principles are based on international research and best practice:

  1. Fun and enjoyment are the key drivers of children’s participation in sport.

  2. Children need to learn basic fundamental movement skills before they can master sport skills.

  3. Games and activities need to be based on the developmental age and stage of the children.

  4. Small sided games with modified equipment and rules provide more touches and opportunities.

  5. More time for training and practice help develop skill acquisition and technical ability.

  6. Early specialisation in sports and in positions should be avoided.
